FAQ

Why should I choose CBT over other talking therapies?

NICE (The National Institute for Clinical Excellence) guidelines are evidenced-based recommendations for health care in England and inform treatments delivered by the NHS. NICE recommends CBT as the first-line treatment for depression and anxiety disorders. Clinical trials have been conducted which have demonstrated CBT’s effectiveness compared with other talking therapies.

How many sessions will I need?

This will be determined after the assessment. CBT is typically time-limited and lasts between 6-20 sessions. However, if your difficulties are more complex or chronic 20-40+ sessions may be required.

How frequently do I attend sessions?

At the start of treatment sessions are weekly for 50-60 minutes, this accelerates the speed at which you can reach your goals. When you start to feel better the frequency can be reduced to fortnightly or less. When you feel ready to end treatment, follow-up sessions are booked at 3 months and 6 months to ensure you are maintaining your progress.

How long will it take me to feel better?

Some people can feel better quicker than expected however some people can feel worse before they feel better. The assessment stage can take up to three sessions; you and your therapist are getting to know each other and gaining a shared understanding of your difficulties. Your therapist can then formulate a treatment plan. The next stage involves identifying and changing the cognitions and behaviors that are maintaining your problems. This part of therapy can be challenging however if you persevere you can reach the end where your symptoms and difficulties are reduced.

Will CBT work for me?

That depends on how much hard work, time and effort you are prepared to put in; the more you do the more you will benefit. The aim of CBT is that you become your own therapist. You will learn a range of psychological and practical techniques which you will be required to practice in-between each session.
